Each year we pick a route, “a direction so to speak”. We have an agenda with no real agenda, except to drive through each small town on our way and see what they have to offer. We find breakfast sandwiches at downtown cafés, coffee drinks from independent shops, sip wine samples, and dip samples. We occasionally find more to buy for ourselves, or maybe each other, but hey, it’s an adventure.
One year we stopped at a second hand shop, and we put together outfits, and yes… we put them on in the car. We buy wine, and dip mixes for the holidays. We find unique toys for young kids, Christmas specials for decorating, cool team sports shirts at independent retail shops, great books, and kitchen gadgets. Our gifts get put in cute bags with tissue. Specialty coffee is always fun to buy, or a gift card for a certain special friend. Most of all, we find the time together a memory.
Our only frustration has been with shops that close early on this day. We are out there! We are spending time in your town. We want to support you. Be open! It’s your day! Don’t close at 1 pm. We look through your windows, and wish we could come in, but you’re closed. Organize a shop hop, have specials, have a drawing. It’s your day! Make it shine! If you do, we remember you, we tell our friends, and we will come again.
Half Baked Sioux Falls would love to see you! Stop in! We enjoy the laughter, and tell us what you found downtown! Share your crazy stories with us; get a cupcake or a cup of tea or a coffee drink. Get off your feet for a minute, and relax. You won’t regret being a part of Small Business Saturday. The day will give you that much needed- this is how our days should be- kind of feeling. Plus you’re supporting the very small business that supports your school, or your fundraiser, and keeps the heart of your town alive.
We will be out there again this year, traveling the back roads of the Midwest. Hitting downtowns we have never stopped at before. I hope to see you out there. You will know while the rest of your friends are being trampled in a large big box store, you’re having the time of your life- downtown.
