So how exactly did Half Baked choose a coffee roasting company from Kansas? Stuart and I used to work at a coffee shop and developed an intense love for good coffee, and Emily is an adventurer always searching for the best of the best. Once upon a day while exploring and experiencing new places, the best tasting latte was had by Emily. It was PT’s Flying Monkey Espresso. PT’s describes the espresso as extremely balanced, yet playful. It features notes of smooth chocolate, honey, and graham cracker, which creates a beautiful harmony of flavors. Imagine experiencing this mouth-pleasing caffeinated deliciousness for the first time. There were fireworks and everything.
PT’s Coffee is 80% a Direct Trade company. Direct Trade cuts out the middleman and creates a direct relationship with the coffee farmers. Several of their farm relationships have existed for nearly a decade. It has given them the opportunity to buy better coffees as well as support the community where the coffee is grown. Straight from PT’s website they say, “The farmers who grow our coffee are not just suppliers, they are our friends and partners. Exceptional coffee is born from great partnerships and our partners are selected for more than their harvests – they are socially responsible and environmentally conscious.” (http://www.ptscoffee.com/about-us). Half Baked loves this philosophy for fairness, community, and a great tasting cup of Joe.
PT’s Coffee’s commitment to their farmers is strong. A favorite brew of ours is the Santa Maria, a Colombia Single Origin coffee with an elegant honey aroma as it brews. This light roast has hints of floral and citrus with a champagne-like flavor. In 2013, the farm where Santa Maria is harvested was attacked by a group of bandits in Buesaco, Nariño, Colombia. The bandits stole and destroyed equipment essential to harvesting and processing the coffee. PT’s Coffee held a fundraising effort for the Finca Santa Maria farm and their family. They raised enough money to save the harvest and help them continue on their way.
Below is a video from PT’s while visiting the Finca Santa Maria farm and meeting the whole family. It’s sentimental and showcases the nature of care and commitment put into each cup of coffee we consume. Without these passionate people, the drink we’ve come to love and depend on just wouldn’t be magical and get our creative juices flowing.
